Quick Update: Tennessee Estate Tax Completely Repealed

tennessee estate taxOver the past four years, Tennessee began a sliding repeal of their state estate tax. As of January 1, 2016, the state no longer has an estate tax.

The repeal encouraged Forbes to remove Tennessee from their annual list of ‘Where Not to Die.’ The tax environment in Tennessee is now more favorable for estate planning purposes. This is not only attractive to existing residents, but individuals who may relocate from states with greater estate tax consequences, like New Jersey and New York. Tennessee remains a top retirement destination, and the elimination of the state tax continues to preserve its appeal.
